Game recap

FYTB ran Spigniv Basket off the floor at home, hammering them 89-48 in a wire-to-wire rout that never gave the visitors a breath. Spigniv came in winless and left with more of the same, as FYTB's interior attack buried them under a steady wave of buckets. FYTB pushed the lead early and never let it dip below double digits, leaning on a relentless two-point barrage while Spigniv's shots kept clanging off the rim. The turning point was the glass: FYTB ripped down 53 rebounds (14 offensive) to Spigniv's 31, generating extra possessions all afternoon and keeping the pressure on every trip down the floor.

FYTB shot 40-of-78 from the field (51%) and a scorching 36-of-50 from two-point range (72%), camping out in the paint and finishing at the rim. They connected on just 4-of-28 from three (14%), but it barely mattered. Spigniv, meanwhile, struggled everywhere: 21-of-74 overall (28%), 15-of-38 inside (39%), 6-of-36 from deep (17%), and an ugly 0-of-1 from the line. They committed 17 turnovers to FYTB's 15 and got out-assisted 25-13.

Luis Lamaj owned the glass and the scorers table alike, posting 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting with 17 boards and 6 assists, including 11-of-15 from inside. Player-97 added 20 on 10-of-13 with 10 makes in the paint. Shouvik Das stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals. Om Patel chipped in 14 on 7-of-11. For Spigniv, #12 scored 14 on a rough 6-of-25, while #20 added 12 and 5 assists but coughed it up 5 times.

STRENGTHS
  1. Coach, I want to acknowledge what did work in this game because we can build from it. First, your perimeter attack showed some life. You hit 6 threes on 36 attempts, and #12 and #77 combined for 5 of those makes. That spacing threat is something opponents must respect, and with better shot selection it becomes a real weapon. Second, the ball moved at times. You finished with 13 assists, led by #20 with 5 and #77 with 4, which means when we run offense through dribble handoffs and skip passes we can generate open looks. Third, you stayed relatively disciplined with only 4 personal fouls and you forced 15 turnovers on the other end, which tells me the defensive scheme is creating disruption even if we are not finishing possessions. There is a defensive identity forming here that we should not abandon.
TO WORK ON
  1. Coach, the box score makes clear that we have significant work ahead, and I want to lay out three priority areas for our next practice block. First, our overall field goal efficiency of 28 percent on 74 attempts is not sustainable. We shot 39 percent on twos and 17 percent on threes, and we scored only 48 points as a team. We must simplify our shot selection. #12 went 6 for 25 and #20 went 6 for 18, both taking contested midrange and off balance shots. I want our offense to start inside out, run set plays that create layups and open threes, and eliminate the contested pull ups that are killing our efficiency. Second, we were destroyed on the glass 31 to 53, and we had only 9 offensive rebounds. #10 and #77 need to crash harder, and our guards have to commit to weak side rebounding. Giving up that many second chance points is a losing formula every single night. Third, we attempted only 1 free throw the entire game and made zero. That means we are not attacking the basket with intent. #12, #20 and #10 need to be coached to seek contact on drives, pump fake into the defender, and get to the stripe at least 10 to 15 times collectively. Combined with our 17 turnovers, the lack of free throws tells me we are playing too passive on offense. Be aggressive, play through contact, and trust your preparation. We have the pieces, but the execution and mindset have to change for us to compete in the next game.

STRENGTHS
  1. Coach, there is a lot to build on in this box score. First, your interior offense was outstanding. You shot 36 for 50 from two point range, which is a 72 percent conversion rate, and that is winning basketball. Luis Lamaj was a force with 24 points on 11 of 15 inside and a team high 17 rebounds, and Om Patel added 14 on 7 of 8 from two. That kind of efficiency in the paint is a clear identity your team can lean on. Second, the defensive glass was exceptional. You grabbed 39 defensive rebounds against only 31 total for Spigniv, which means you ended possessions and gave yourself extra live ball opportunities with 14 offensive boards as well. That 53 to 31 rebounding margin is the single biggest reason you won this game. Third, your defensive activity was elite. Twelve steals and only 3 commits, defying how you disrupted their offense all night. Aadit Patel set the tone with 4 steals and 5 assists, and Shouvik Das added 8 assists to lead a balanced attack with 25 team assists. That is a connected, disruptive group that plays the right way.
TO WORK ON
  1. Coach, despite the win there are three areas we have to address in practice this week. First, the three point shot was a major weakness at 4 for 28, just 14 percent. We cannot rely solely on twos against better competition. We need to run specific shooting drills with #97, Aadit Patel, Om Patel and Shouvik Das to rebuild confidence from beyond the arc, and we need to design sets that generate cleaner catch and shoot threes rather than contested ones. Second, we recorded zero blocks as a team, which means we lack rim protection when the initial perimeter defense breaks down. Luis is a great interior scorer but we need to teach our bigs and help side defenders to vertical contest and protect the rim, otherwise opponents with athletic finishers will punish us. Third, we had 15 turnovers against a team that does not pressure the ball heavily. Luis had 5 turnovers and #97 had 2, and several of those came from forcing passes into traffic. We need to emphasize decision making drills, two pass reads, and playing under control in the half court. Also, we only attempted 7 free throws, which means we are not being aggressive enough attacking the rim to draw contact. Getting to the line 15 to 20 times per game would open up our offense significantly.
