2011 Bobcats vs Mambas
Game recap
The 2011 Bobcats walked away with a 38-25 win over the Mambas, and if you wanted the headline, it lived on the glass. Bobcats ripped down 51 rebounds to just 32 for Mambas, a +19 margin that fueled extra possessions all night long. Twenty-three of those were offensive boards, which kept the Mambas defense on its heels even when shots weren't falling. The 28 defensive rebounds limited Mambas to one look per trip, and that combination of effort and length decided the game.
The shooting was rough across the board, with both teams hovering around 24% from the floor. Bobcats connected on 14-of-58 overall, including a frigid 2-of-24 from beyond the arc (8.3%). Mambas were even colder from deep, going 0-of-5 from three, and they managed just 12-of-51 overall. Free throws were a mess too: Bobcats 7-of-17, Mambas 2-of-10. In a game with that many empty trips, the rebounding edge was the great equalizer. Turnovers were even at 17 apiece, so it was second-chance buckets and defensive stops that flipped the script.
For the Bobcats, #30 led the way with 13 points on 5-of-22 shooting, while #99 was a monster on the boards with 12 points and 15 rebounds on 5-of-13. #69 stuffed the stat sheet with 2 points, 10 boards, and 4 steals, and #8 added 5 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. For Mambas, #6 posted 9 points and 9 rebounds, #17 had 8 on 4-of-10, and #20 finished with 8 on a tough 4-of-18.
Both squads sit at 1-1 on the season after the result.
Team takeaways
- Coaching staff, there is a lot to build on from this performance. First, the glass work was outstanding. We crashed the boards for 51 total rebounds, including a massive 23 offensive rebounds, which created valuable second-chance opportunities and wore down their interior. Player 99 was a force inside with 15 rebounds and 6 on the offensive end, while Player 8 added 11 rebounds and 2 blocks, giving us real interior presence. Second, our defensive activity was a clear strength. We generated 9 steals, with Player 69 leading the way with 4 takeaways, and we kept our fouls to just 9, which shows discipline and good positioning. Third, we controlled the game overall and secured the win by getting to the free throw line 17 times, which is a sign we were aggressive and attacking. The rotation, defensive intensity, and rebounding effort are all things we want to carry forward into the next matchup.
- That said, there are three areas we need to address in practice this week. First, our shooting efficiency was poor. We hit only 24.1 percent from the field and a brutal 8.3 percent from three on 24 attempts. We are launching too many threes without enough penetration or ball reversal to generate quality looks. Coach, I would like to emphasize shot selection drills and early offense sets that get us into the paint before kicks. Player 30 took 22 shots and we need him to be more efficient by mixing in drives and mid-range pull-ups. Second, our ball security was a major issue. Seventeen turnovers is far too many, and several of them were unforced. We need stricter dribble-handoff rules and more purposeful passing. Only 5 assists shows we are playing in isolation too often. Third, our free throw shooting at 41.2 percent is unacceptable. With the amount of fouls we draw, we are leaving easy points at the line. End-of-practice free throw shooting needs to become a non-negotiable routine. Tighten these three areas and we will be much harder to beat.
- Coaching staff, despite the loss there were some encouraging signs we can build on. First, our defense kept us in the game. Holding the opponent to 37 points and contesting shots inside shows the system is working, and we forced 17 turnovers which tells me our pressure scheme is creating opportunities. Second, Player 6 was a bright spot with 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals, showing the kind of two-way energy we need from our role players. Third, we only committed 11 fouls and grabbed 21 defensive rebounds, which kept us from getting blown out and gave us a chance to compete. Those defensive habits are the foundation we will lean on moving forward.
- However, we have three clear areas that cost us this game and need urgent attention. First, our shooting was the biggest issue. We hit 0 of 5 from three, shot 23.5 percent from the field, and went just 2 of 10 from the free throw line. Twenty percent from the stripe is simply unacceptable and we need to dedicate time in every practice to free throw fundamentals under fatigue. Second, we were destroyed on the offensive glass, getting outrebounded 32 to 51 with only 11 offensive rebounds to their 23. We need to commit to box-out drills, emphasize crashing from the weak side, and put our bigs in better position to pursue misses. Player 20 took 18 shots and we need better balance in our shot distribution rather than leaning on volume. Third, our offensive flow was stagnant. Only 5 assists on 12 made field goals and 17 turnovers shows we are playing hero ball. Coach, I recommend we install more set plays with multiple actions, off-ball screens, and flare curls to get easier looks. Improve the free throws, rebounding, and ball movement and the results will turn around quickly.
