Brown Mambaz vs Titans
Game recap
The Titans held off Brown Mambaz 40-34, moving to 3-0 on the season and staying perfect. It was a tight, grind-it-out game where every possession mattered, and the six-point margin told the story of a Titans team that never pulled away but never let Brown Mambaz take control either. Brown Mambaz, now 1-3, kept clawing back by attacking the paint and forcing mistakes, finishing with 8 steals and pushing the Titans into 15 giveaways of their own.
The shooting split was fascinating. Brown Mambaz actually hit at a better clip from the floor, 12-of-34 (35%) compared to the Titans' 10-of-36 (28%), and they owned the paint, going 12-of-32 on twos (38%) while the Titans managed just 5-of-23 (22%) inside. What flipped the game was the perimeter and the line. The Titans buried 5-of-13 from three (38%) while Brown Mambaz went 0-of-2 from beyond the arc. At the stripe, the Titans hit 9-of-17 (53%) and Brown Mambaz managed just 7-of-19 (37%). The Titans also won the glass, 30-23.
michael perrin carried the Titans' offense with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, three of them from deep, plus 6 rebounds. #15 added 7 points and a game-high 11 boards, justyn smith chipped in 4, and Shawn Robinson added 3. For Brown Mambaz, #9 led the way with 10 points, #20 added 7, and #1 finished with 6.
Fouls were a theme: 18 on the Titans, 13 on Brown Mambaz, which is why both teams combined for 36 free throw attempts.
Team takeaways
- Coach, there is plenty to be encouraged about in this performance. The biggest positive is our dominance inside the arc, where we shot 12 for 32 on two-pointers and consistently got to the paint against a physical Titans front line. We are establishing an inside identity that opponents will have to respect, and #1 set the tone with efficient interior scoring. Second, the defensive pressure was elite, generating 8 steals and forcing 15 Titans turnovers, which directly fueled our transition opportunities and kept us in the game despite shooting struggles. Our guards deserve credit for their active hands and on-ball tenacity. Third, we showed good ball distribution with 7 assists, and several players contributed playmaking touches including #17 and #20, which is the kind of connective offense we want to see more of.
- However, three concerns need to be addressed before our next outing. First and most obvious, we attempted only 2 three-pointers and missed both, making us entirely too predictable on offense. Defenses can collapse into the paint and dare us to shoot from outside, which negates our inside advantage. We need to integrate at least 3 to 5 three-point attempts per game and identify shooters we can trust to space the floor. Second, our free throw shooting at 36.8 percent, 7 for 19, is leaving critical points on the board. In a close game, missing 12 free throws is the difference between winning and losing. We are going to implement competitive free throw shooting drills at the end of every practice until this number climbs above 70 percent. Third, our offensive rebounding total of just 5 is far too low. With our size and physicality, we should be crashing the glass harder on both ends. #15 had 5 offensive boards which shows it can be done, but we need that effort from every big who steps on the floor. Add offensive rebounding drills and second-effort emphasis to our practice plan immediately.
- Coaching staff, there are real positives to build on here. First, your three-point shooting was outstanding at 5 for 13, 38.5 percent, which shows the shooters on this roster can stretch the floor and punish defenses that collapse inside. Michael Perrin was a major catalyst with 3 made threes and 15 points off the bench, giving you a reliable second-unit scoring punch. Second, the rebounding effort was excellent, particularly on the defensive glass with 21 defensive boards, which limited Brown Mambaz to just one shot per possession on most trips. Your active hands also produced 6 steals, showing the defensive intensity and disruptive potential this group has when locked in. These are all things we can lean into going forward.
- That said, there are three areas that need urgent attention. The most glaring issue is the overall field goal percentage of just 27.8 percent on 36 attempts. We are settling for too many contested looks and failing to convert high-percentage opportunities, especially inside where we shot only 5 for 23 from two-point range. We need to run more structured sets that get our bigs touches near the rim rather than launching from the perimeter. Second, the 15 turnovers are simply unacceptable at this level. That is nearly half of our made field goals given away directly to the opponent. We must prioritize ball security in practice this week, especially with our point guard group where we saw 3 turnovers from #00 and 4 from Perrin. Third, the 18 personal fouls show a lack of discipline. We were probably reaching on defense rather than moving our feet, and that inflated Brown Mambaz free throw attempts to 19. Emphasize defensive footwork and positioning in our next sessions, and let the game come to us without relying on fouls to stop penetration.
