The Boys vs Hookah
Game recap
A three-point thriller. The Boys edged Hookah 58-55 in a grind-it-out battle that came down to the wire. The Boys shot a blistering 60% from the field (24-of-40) and buried 5-of-12 from three, but their 17 turnovers kept Hookah hanging around. Hookah answered by crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 offensive boards, but managed just 3-of-15 from beyond the arc and shot 40% overall (24-of-60). Both squads finished even on the glass at 26 total rebounds.
The Boys lived in the paint, connecting on 19-of-28 from two-point range (68%) and adding 5-of-12 from downtown. They attacked the rim and got to the line 15 times, cashing 5. Hookah spread their looks but lacked efficiency, going 21-of-45 inside (47%) and a cold 3-of-15 from distance. The turnover battle stung both sides differently: The Boys' 17 giveaways nearly canceled out their shooting edge, while Hookah's 9 turnovers were offset by 14 second-chance boards.
For Hookah, #7 was a beast: 22 points on 9-of-15 with 11 boards and 3 assists. #11 added 21 points on 10-of-22 with 6 rebounds. #2 paced The Boys with 21 on an efficient 10-of-17 (9-of-11 from two), though he coughed it up 6 times. #21 chipped in 16 on 6-of-9 (2-of-2 from three) with 6 boards and 4 dimes. #30 stuffed the stat sheet with a 6/9/7 line.
Team takeaways
- Three positives from the boxscoreFirst, the shooting efficiency was elite at 60 percent from the field (24 for 40), which is championship-level execution and shows the team is generating high quality shot attempts through excellent offensive sets. Second, the two-point shooting at 67.9 percent (19 for 28) demonstrates outstanding finishing ability around the rim and from mid-range, indicating good shot selection and strong post play. Third, the three-point shooting at 41.7 percent (5 for 12) was well above average and stretched the defense effectively. The 18 assists reflect unselfish ball movement and the 20 defensive rebounds show solid fundamentals in protecting the rim. #2 led the scoring with 21 points on efficient 10 for 17 shooting, while #16 contributed a strong all-around performance with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. #30 added 7 assists and 9 rebounds showcasing great court vision and hustle. This was a well-deserved win built on efficient offense.
- Three areas for improvement from the boxscoreFirst, the 17 turnovers are a major concern, nearly double what we typically want to see, and this directly limited our scoring opportunities. #2 had 6 turnovers and #55 had 5 turnovers, so we need to address ball-handling pressure and decision-making in the halfcourt. I recommend more two-on-two and three-on-three drills to simulate game-speed reads. Second, the free throw shooting at 33.3 percent (5 for 15) was unacceptably poor and cost us valuable points. We left 10 points at the line that could have made this a more comfortable margin. Every player needs to log extra free throw reps in practice, especially under simulated fatigue conditions. Third, the lack of offensive rebounding with only 6 offensive rebounds means we are giving up second chance points and allowing defenses to set up easily. We need at least one or two players committed to crashing the glass on every shot. Additionally, only 3 steals indicates our perimeter defense could be more disruptive. Let us tighten up these details because in tighter games these issues will decide the outcome.
- Three positives from the boxscoreFirst, the offensive glass work was outstanding with 14 offensive rebounds, creating valuable second chance opportunities and showing great hustle and effort on the boards. Second, the ball movement was excellent with 17 assists on 24 made field goals, indicating a team-oriented offense where players are finding the open man rather than forcing isolated shots. Third, the defensive pressure was effective with 7 steals, showing active hands and good anticipation in passing lanes. #7 deserves special mention for his dominant double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while #999 contributed 21 points along with 4 steals. The defensive rebounding contribution from multiple players also helped limit transition opportunities. Overall, the team competed hard and played with great energy despite the narrow loss.
- Three areas for improvement from the boxscoreFirst, the three-point shooting was a significant weakness at only 20 percent (3 for 15), which indicates either poor shot selection or a need for more shooting practice in practice sessions. I recommend running more off-ball screens and catch-and-shoot drills to get shooters open looks from rhythm. Second, the complete absence of blocked shots (0 BLK) suggests we lack interior rim protection and shot contesting. We need our bigs to commit to verticality drills and help-side rotations to deter drives to the basket. Third, the team only attempted 9 free throws, which means we were not aggressive enough in attacking the rim and drawing contact. I want to see more drives and post-ups that force defenders to foul. Additionally, #22 and #666 combined for 0 points on 0 for 9 shooting with limited minutes, so shot selection and conditioning need attention. Discipline on defense also needs work as 10 personal fouls is on the higher side. Let us refocus on these areas in our next practice.
