Hookah vs Mambas
Game recap
Hookah earned a 7-point win over Mambas, 43-36, in a grinding, defense-first battle where both offenses sputtered. Both squads shot under 40%, with Hookah checking in at 38% (16-of-42) and Mambas at 34% (16-of-47), and the turnovers piled up across the box score: Hookah gave it away 13 times while Mambas committed 12. Hookah carved its edge inside, draining 13-of-25 from two-point range (52%) while Mambas went 12-of-32 from two (37%). From deep it flipped the other way, Mambas connected on 4-of-15 (27%) while Hookah managed just 3-of-17 (18%), but Hookah's interior work plus a disruptive ball-pressure night (8 steals to Mambas' 4) closed the door. Both teams tied on the glass at 25 rebounds, with Mambas winning the offensive end 9-7 and Hookah owning defensive boards 18-16.
For Mambas, #23 was the engine: 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting with 4-of-9 from downtown, plus 4 boards, 2 steals, and a block. #20 added an efficient 10 points on 5-of-9 from two, and #99 chipped in 8 points with 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
Hookah was paced by #7 with 11 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting, and #11 with 11 points, 3 steals, and a block. #1 added 8 points and 4 assists, and #22 knocked down a triple off the bench for 5.
Team takeaways
- Three positives worth building on. First, defensive activity was outstanding with 8 steals and only 4 personal fouls, showing disciplined aggressive defense that protected us from foul trouble while still disrupting the opponent. Second, interior efficiency was a clear strength as we shot 52 percent from two-point range on 25 attempts, with #7 dominating the glass for 11 rebounds including 10 defensive boards, giving us second-chance prevention and strong post presence. Third, shot selection discipline from inside the arc gave us a higher overall field goal percentage than our opponent at 38.1 percent versus 34.0, proving our halfcourt offense can generate quality looks when we commit to it.
- Three areas we must address immediately. First, the free throw line was a disqualifying failure at 0 for 4, and we have no excuse for that in a two-point loss. Every practice session this week needs to end with competitive free throw shooting under simulated game fatigue, and we need to identify who is missing these and run targeted reps with them. Second, turnovers at 13 are simply too high for a competitive game. #99 had 4, #23 had 3, and #666 and #7 each had 3 as well. We need to install late-game ball security sets, reduce live-ball dribbling in the halfcourt, and emphasize pass fakes and pivot footwork before attacking the closeout. Third, the three-point shooting at 17.6 percent on 17 attempts shows we are forcing perimeter looks that are not there. We took 17 threes and made only 3. Coach, I would rather we reduce attempts to 8 to 10 per game and concentrate on getting into the paint where we shot 52 percent, unless we have a shooter running off a screen with daylight. Bottom line, this was a winnable game and we lost it at the charity stripe and with the basketball.
- Three positives that delivered us the win despite some rough patches. First, we found the answer from beyond the arc shooting 26.7 percent on 15 attempts, a clear margin better than our opponent, and #23 was the catalyst with 4 made threes and a team-high 17 points on only 12 shots, showing elite shot quality and shot-maker instinct. Second, offensive rebounding gave us extra possessions with 9 offensive boards, and we converted those into points without needing to overextend our halfcourt sets. Third, we protected the basketball slightly better in pressure moments and trusted our scorers, with our assist-to-turnover ratio holding steady enough to grind out a two-point win on the road. Winning ugly is a sign of a maturing team and I am proud of the resilience shown.
- Three areas to clean up before our next outing or we will not get away with it again. First, two-point efficiency is alarmingly low at 37.5 percent on 32 attempts, and that is the foundation of every offense in this league. We need to revisit our pick-and-roll reads, post entry angles, and finishing drills in practice, because we cannot expect to win many games when we miss nearly two out of every three shots inside the arc. Second, fouls climbed to 7 and we only attempted 2 free throws, which means we are playing too physical on defense without earning the whistle on the other end. We have to play disciplined defense with our feet not our hands, and we have to attack the rim with conviction to draw contact and get to the line. Third, turnovers at 12 are not acceptable for a team with our scoring talent. #6 had 3, #23 had 3, and several others had multiple. We have to simplify our offense in transition, value each possession especially late in quarters, and protect the ball when help defenders rotate. Fix the two-point shooting and the fouling and we will not just win close ones, we will start winning comfortably.
